Chapter Eighteen

I’m surprised, again, by the efforts they took to welcome me into their home. The center of the dining room table is filled with three platters – one with red and green grapes skewered in an alternating pattern with cubes of white cheese, another with an assortment of cookies, and the last has a nice arrangement of sliced cheeses, sliced and folded meats, like ham, salami, and pepperoni, and crackers. There’s also a tray loaded with a teapot, mugs, and a bowl of brown sugar cubes and a little pitcher of cream.

“Wow, this table should be in a magazine.”

Howard walks in with a stack of plates and napkins, and modestly says, “I don’t know about that, but we do like to be fancy sometimes.” He winks, then suggests, “Maybe one of your creations will be in a magazine one day. You’re still thinking about pursuing culinary arts, right?”

Miss Sandra whispers, “Go on and take a seat, honey,” then walks around the other side to sit next to Howard.

I answer, “Yes, I’m pretty excited about it,” while Niagara tugs me over to a chair to sit next to her. “Whitney brought her laptop to the hospital a few days ago and helped me apply for some scholarships and two schools so far. One in Vermont and one in-state. She said it’s recommended to apply to least eight, but it’s pretty time consuming, so we couldn’t get them all done in one day.”

Howard nods while he begins pouring steaming-hot tea into the mugs and Miss Sandra begins passing them out. “Applying for college is quite an arduous process. But the earlier you can get your applications sent in, the better your chances of being accepted into your top picks. We had to help Malcolm with his applications a few years ago, so we’re pretty savvy on the process, if you’d like us to help you get them squared away this week. Actually, I’d like to insist, because it will be good practice for when we need to do the process again next year for Bridgett.” He nods at Bridgett, and suggests, “If Dylan doesn’t mind, you should sit in on a few applications to get mentally prepared for next year.”

Bridgett looks at me, so I quickly say, “I don’t mind,” and she smiles and nods.

“Okay, we’ll have a college application party. I vote that we order pizza, wings, and garlic breadsticks that night.”

Howard and Miss Sandra chuckle, before Miss Sandra says, “Sounds like a fine idea to me.”

“Dylan.” Niagara tugs on my shirt sleeve, then leans forward and grabs a skewer of grapes and cheese in each of her hands, and holds them up. “These are mouse kabobs. They’re my favorite snack. Here.” She sets one on my plate. “Do you like cookies?”

“Thank you, and, yes, I love cookies.”

She leans forward again and picks up two fistfuls of cookies and drops a few onto my plate, making all of us laugh, and she grins up at me.

“Thanks. What’s your favorite cookie?”

While she licks cookie crumbs off her fingers, she answers, “Chocolate chip.
