Felix met us on the docks, took one look at the two of us, and rolled his eyes. Jovi’s smug expression did something to me. A warm, fuzzy ache settled over me like a hug. As I watched the pair swim out to sea, I stifled a jealous pang. Felix needed the ocean to heal completely. I could be patient.

My body still dripped seawater as I ran into James at the dive shop entrance.

“You look happy,” he said. “Good swim today?”

“Yeah, you could say that, I guess.” At my furious blush, my boss smirked, making me wonder if every paranormal in the Keys knew my business.

“Gideon has a big mouth,” I said, slipping past him and diving for the safety of my closet. James followed, standing in the doorway as I toweled off.

“I don’t get it, Cal. You could afford a nice place somewhere. Why do you stay here?” At my nervous look, he said, “Not that I mind, of course. Stay as long as you like. But you’ve been saving your money for years. You must have enough to get a one-room apartment by now.”

I nodded. “Yeah, but I’m saving for a trip to Hawaii. I want to check out the white octopuses there. You never know.”

James pursed his lips. “You can’t dive that deep. Those creatures live below 4000 feet, don’t they?”

“That’s a fact. But I figured I’d check it out anyway. The worst case scenario is that I get a badly needed vacation.”

Pushing his tousled, sandy blonde hair back from his face, James smiled. My boss oozed a Keysie vibe—a hard-working center with a gooey beach bum coating. He also happened to be the Sovereign of the eastern seaboard of the United States. You’d never know it to look at him, which was precisely the point.

The closely guarded secret almost leaked when James came to our rescue in Charleston. I would never forget the shock of walking in on him in his Wyvern form, chowing down on five hundred pounds of beef. The Others here knew our ruler was generous and kind. They didn’t know he could fix their boat motor and rent them a kayak. It was the perfect disguise, and Davy Jones Locker was smack dab in the center of the Keys.

James’ tanned cheeks wrinkled into a smile. “Hawaii, it is, then. Well, don’t plan those holidays just yet. Gideon brought me up to speed on our problem, and I have a few questions for you about your trip across the Veil.”

“Ok? It's not like I learned much. I was in a cage most of the time.”

“My point exactly. Tell me about the cage.”

I rubbed my chin, wondering where he was going with this. “Well, it was big enough to fit two Honda Civics bumper to bumper. We couldn’t stand upright. The bars were about three inches apart, and I remember with painful clarity that they were square. They were made of iron and burned my skin like hellfire, as you can see.” I pointed at my face, and James frowned.
