Chapter 5
The Effects of Bullying Celebrities
Cyber bullying affects the everyday life of the victim and becomes a constant source of distress and worry. Mona Oâ Moore of the Anti- Bullying centre at Trinity College in Dublin, has written âThere is a growing body of research which indicates that individuals, whether child or adult, who are persistently subjected to abusive behavior are at the risk of stress related illness. Those who have been the targets of bullying can suffer from long term emotional and behavioral problems.â Letâs look at the different consequences of bullying:
Loss of Work:
As millennials and young generations continue to expose themselves on social media, a door is opened to allow anybody in the world with a phone to make remarks regarding their looks, personal life, or any other harsh comment they could think of. I, Omar Arafat, am a victim of this hate epidemic, but to a lesser extent. In the summer of 2016, I decided to create daily videos, where I would document my life and entertain my audience, posting them on YouTube. Averaging about 10,000 views per video, I noticed my numbers exponentially rising, along with the dislikes. I tried my best to ignore the negative comments but they were everywhere. I felt that this wasnât the norm but it really bothered me of how personal things about my personality and appearance would be brought up every day. People werenât afraid to voice their opinion about me and it really took a toll on my body. Caught up in the moment, I continued to upload videos due to the heavy growth of my channel, but little did I know I was doing more harm to myself than good. Gaining 30,000 followers on instagram, I received various direct messages and emails flaming my character, and some even telling me to end my life. I didnât take anything personal as I realized that every public figure receives hate messages like mine but it got to a point where I didnât want to view another one. I privatized all my YouTube videos so no one would be able to watch me ever again. I wanted to end my online career because of the hate, so I did. I only kept my Instagram and Snapchat accounts to keep in touch with my friends, and I never wanted to publicize my life ever again. Of course I still get messages to this day from individuals I donât know personally, but the negativity has toned down. In the process, I realized that there were many other alternatives I could have used instead of completely shutting down my brand. I could have embraced my passion to continue doing what I love: filming videos all day and spending all night editing each one. I had the option of not reading my comments and direct messages. I couldâve disabled comments on my videos. I couldâve used the hate to motivate me to produce better videos and prove them wrong, letting the success be my noise, but the experience was all new to me.
