The Bigger Picture

All of the previous examples have described relatively small, short-term effects of weather; however, we should also be thinking about broader-scale, longer-term effects of variations in climate. Drought can affect breeding success, can mean fewer insects for nestlings, and can affect even the wintering ranges of seedeaters by reducing seed production of plants. Likewise, cold wet weather over the course of a season can impact birds’ breeding success. And then there are the increasingly obvious and increasingly serious effects of global climate change, which are significantly affecting bird distribution and weather patterns, as in the examples described above.

Almost every column of the Changing Seasons in North American Birds attempts to draw some conclusions about how the very real, and very perceptible, changes in our climate are affecting birds. Once again I’d like to mention that this journal is an indispensible resource for the student of bird distribution and its changes. At the same time, Christmas Bird Counts, North American Breeding Bird Surveys, and even eBird reports (all of which I will discuss in detail in chapter 6) are tracking these changes, and those data are accessible to all of us.
