Helen gives killer advice. Have a crisis of love, life, faith, relationships, even cocktail parties, and Helen is your definite go to. The one thing Helen has never given is advice about is killers. Specifically, my killers.

Or my victims or plots or anything that might appear in one of my books in The Mrs. Christmas Mysteries series. I say series, but really, there were only four, which

Helen has informed me is an awkward amount at best. Too many to be a trilogy, not enough to genuinely be a series.

My point in all this is that the only killer writing advice Helen has ever given me is that I should do more of it. Writing, that is, not killing.

It’s an ethical thing with her. She would never want anyone who would turn to her for advice to fear some detail of their most difficult moments might turn up in a work of fiction.

My love life, or lack thereof, my business, my family, those Helen is all up in all the time but my fiction? That, she stays out of.

I think if more people knew this trick for keeping Helen from doling out her well-intended wisdom, the whole town would start writing novels.

If only the whole town would start reading them! Maybe then I’d try my hand at writing another book and wouldn’t be so worried about what’s going to happen if Ulee Yule gives someone else my job.

Or goes to prison for killing Quentin.
