How long the kiss lasted I have no recollection; I only know that I was brought back to this planet with a bang, for I felt myself actually being thrown off him. It was as if an electric shock had wrenched us apart. I stood for a moment at arm’s length from him, swaying and dazed. He was glaring at me as if he hated me, and I became overwhelmed with a feeling of utter, utter dejection. I knew what it was to be rejected, but this feeling was comparable with nothing I had experienced before. I had been rejected by Arthur Boyle and that had hurt, but in comparison this was like having the skin ripped off your flesh while remaining conscious of it.

Logan Rossiter was now no longer looking at me, for his big body was turned from me as if in shame. Once again I knew I was going to cry, cry tears that would wrench my being in two, but I could let no-one witness this crying, least of all this man. I swung blindly away, and my feet were lifting to run, when his hand caught me, and so swift had been his effort to reach me that he almost overbalanced, and me with him. And again we were clinging to each other, and now he spoke my name in a way that no man had used it before. It was like a loving caress, but it was also, I knew, a farewell. His voice was thick and almost lost in his throat as he muttered, ‘Kate. My God, Kate.’ Then, ‘Forget this. You must…Oh, Kate.’

I could not look at him, and I made no answer. He put a little distance between us and his hand was only lightly on my arm when he spoke now. ‘Come on up to the house; I’ll get Patterson to take you home. Come, Kate.’

I shook my head. ‘No. I’m…I’m all right…’ I nearly added, ‘I’ll miss the bus.’ If I had, I am sure I would have subsided in a bout of hysterical laughter.
