Chapter 20

IMOGEN AND AMELIA

Serena held up her hands, and nothing happened after a few seconds. Until… a giant whooshing sound could be heard, like a thousand galloping horses or thunder rushing over the hill. A tidal wave rose from the sea, twenty… no, fifty feet high. Imogen and Amelia huddled in their cabin, gripping each other’s hands, bracing for impact. But no impact came. The boat only rose on the sea gently, picked up gently as if a giant hand had scooped it up, and glided toward its destination.

But the men, the crew, who had realised they harboured two witches on board were shouting, seemingly afraid of their guest’s power. Their unwanted guest.

“Catch the witches! Catch them all and burn them at the stake! We’ll celebrate and drink while they burn tonight!” The twins looked at each other, horrified by what they had heard the men saying. They had to get off this ship safely and quickly.

“Amelia, what if we can’t get off? What if they capture us?”

Imogen sat on her bed, knees hugged to her chest, breathing raggedly. Her twin sensed her anxiety. She ran to her side on the other bed, there were two cots in the small cabin and hugged her.

“It will be okay. Thank the gods Serena the Sea Witch came when she did. She must have been sent by the gods themselves.”

Imogen looked at her sister. “My father had always said that the gods despised witches, and that was why we were forbidden to use magic because we would incur their wrath if we did.”

Amelia snorted. “Sis, that is horse dung if ever I’ve heard it. He was manipulating you, lying to you so you wouldn’t use your magic. He was probably afraid of his own reputation than your magic itself.”

Imogen smiled. “Why are you so wise?”

Amelia grinned. “There has to be at least one smart twin.”

Imogen giggled and gasped in mock disgust. “Are you saying I’m stupid?”

“Oh, no darling. Naïve, sheltered.”

“I was joking. But you’re right.”

Amelia faltered. “Imogen… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean…”

“It’s okay. I didn’t take offence. I am naïve and sheltered because my parents raised me to be ignorant of my magic and these artifacts, and even the secrets of our births. One reason I came on this trip, the other being that I didn’t have a choice because, well… you know.”

Amelia nodded.

“One reason I came is to learn about my magic and who I am. I actually don’t know who I truly am. My whole life has been a lie,” she said, her voice breaking. A tear fell down her cheek.

Amelia hugged her sister tighter.

“Me too. We’ll find out who we are together. And then find a way to rescue Pavin.”

After a few minutes of huddling together on Imogen’s bed, they realised the ship had stopped moving.

Amelia rushed to look out the port hole in their cabin. She saw land.

“Hey, I think we’ve arrived.”

The girls made their way cautiously to the top deck. Imogen raised her dagger in front of her, and Amelia was ready to use her mind power in case anyone came toward them and meant them harm.
