“Have fun?” Peter grinned at me as I entered the kitchen of our small condominium rental. Until we had our finances in order, we decided to hold off on buying anything out here. We still both had student loan debt to pay off, and Peter’s big salary wasn’t enough to pay off all our loans and be able to keep up with the lifestyle preferred by all the associates at his firm, so we decided to do the fiscally responsible thing and make sure that our priority was first to become debt-free.

“Yeah. It was actually awesome. Sharon is amazing. She brought me out today to go shopping, go to the gym.” I put my bags down on the table. “And get this. We went to a pole dancing class. Can you believe it?”

One corner of Peter’s mouth moved slightly, giving me a sly grin. His eyes said the most. “Oh, really?”

“Yes. I thought it would be cardio, or spinning, or something like that. But nope. Pole dancing!” I shook my curvy bottom and laughed, trying to get a laugh out of Peter.

Going to California for a new start, indeed. Manifest destiny. But I was already feeling like it was too late, based on the fact that I was now in my early 30s and didn't have the fresh-faced inexperience and energy of a recent college grad.

“Anyway, we have a party tonight, you know.” I looked Peter up and down. He was in his boxers, with a copy of the New York Times open on the coffee table and Sports Center on mute on the TV.

“A party? I thought it was just a little get-together with a few other couples at Charlie and Sharon’s.”

“Oh, well, I don't know. You're probably right. Sharon told me it was a party, but I probably misunderstood. Listen.” I wasn’t sure if I should share with him what I suspected about Sharon, but I wanted to prepare him in case an awkward situation were to arise that night. “When I went shopping today with Sharon, she was...how
