The evening of his friend’s return, John sat companionably with a bubbling Cliff in their favorite restaurant’s private room.

He grinned at his friend’s animation. Cliff wasn’t quite as giddy as if he and Skyler had hit a home run—if the pair had crossed that threshold, he sure wouldn’t be here—but definitely more upbeat than he’d been in months.

Which meant there was a chance Cliff had finally come clean. Casually amid the flow of excitement, John inserted, “So have you told her what you were doing in Middle Yemen yet?”

Abruptly, his friend scowled. “No.”

Like a spigot, the burble of words cut off with that no. But John knew how to pry.

“Well, I can see why. She scares the crap out of me, too.”

Cliff shook his head. “I can’t tell her the full story until I’ve secured the leak—”

“I thought you’d never believe it’s her?”

“It isn’t her.” The other’s eyes narrowed and his words turned distinctly growly. “But anything I say to anybody could get back to the client. So I can’t tell her the full story.”

“Part of the story?”

“Well…problem is, I’m not sure how she’ll take it.”

John raised both brows. “Is it important?”

“Important? I don’t know.” Cliff studied his hands clasped loosely in his lap. Then his head came up, his gaze direct and intense. “Yes, it’s important. No, it’s vital.”

“Vital, hmm?” John hid a smile. “Why?”

His friend sagged. “I don’t know.”

John kept his knowing smile firmly tucked away.
