MURPHY

The detectives arrived together. Elwin took the lead, which didn’t surprise Murphy. Sarah stood behind him, glowering at all of them. She hadn’t said anything yet; he knew she was holding on for the beautiful rant that would come at some point.

Murphy was almost disappointed when they simply took George’s statement, a copy of the video, and collected the evidence. He exchanged a confused look with the others when they’d left. “Was it anticlimactic for anyone else?”

“No yelling.” George sank down on the couch. He covered his face with a cushion for a moment, mumbling muffled curses into it. “Why do I feel more concerned?”

“Don’t allow anyone connected to Griffin into your cottage. And if the detectives come ’round again, give me a call.” Evan chugged down the last of his coffee before heading towards the door. “Try to keep it during normal business hours if at all possible.”

“Yes, we’ll definitely schedule any and all legal issues to a nine-to-five window.” Murphy smirked when Evan flipped him off. “Tell Teagan hello.”

“Wanker.” Evan slammed the door shut behind him.

Murphy shook his head at the dramatics. He turned to find George with his head in his hands. “The detectives know you didn’t kill him. We don’t even know what’s in the eye cream. No point in stressing at the moment.”

“And yet, here I am. Still stressed.” George collapsed against the cushions with a groan. “You realise my dad and yours are descending into the middle of this madness.”

“Bugger. I’d forgotten.” Murphy dropped onto the sofa beside George. He threw his arm around him and drew him into his side. “Sarah’s not going to be thrilled when they begin sticking their noses into her inquiry.”

“They wouldn’t.”

“Your dad would move heaven and earth for you. And I’m fairly confident mine loves you more than me,” Murphy teased. “Can you imagine either of them deciding to ignore a murder inquiry?”

“Well, no. But only because they’re cut from the same interfering cloth.” George had an excellent point.

Duncan Baird and Rishi Sheth had become the best of mates several years ago during the Highland Games when they’d both been visiting their respective sons and met each other. It had been like long-lost brothers reconnecting. The two were inseparable.

“They’re going to want to know about us.” Murphy had deflected questions about their relationship. Neither of them wanted to be overloaded with questions from their families when they’d only just started dating—officially. “And they’re definitely going to be obnoxious about shoving themselves into the investigation.”

George yawned in response. “They’re going to be who they are. I say we let Detectives Smith and Baird deal with the issues of parental interference.”

Murphy had to chuckle at the visual of Sarah attempting to corral the two older men into behaving themselves. “Brilliant. Right. If you keep yawning like that, you’ll crack your jaw. Think it’s time for bed.”

“Stay?” George picked absently at a thread on the cushion in his lap. “To sleep?”

Murphy squeezed his arm around George a little more tightly. “Of course.
