CHAPTER 14

Thursday, April 20

Jenna arrived at the Nicholas County Courthouse at nine o’clock sharp after dropping Randi off at Angie’s apartment. Unable to shut her brain off, it had been difficult to get any sleep, but her partner must have worked some kind of magic on her because she was wide awake and eager to find some evidence against someone other than Vince.

“Good morning, Lieutenant Ferrari,” Booker greeted, using her title in front of his fellow deputies. Jenna knew any one of them would revel in running around town, spreading rumors about him having a fling with a white policewoman behind his wife’s back.

“Good morning, Deputy Reid,” she returned. “I’ve made a list of places I’d like to go, people to talk to if we can, but Vince is due before the judge in an hour.”

Sheriff Lamb stuck his head in the office and glanced around. “Booker, you still working on that Davis case?” he asked in a gruff, disapproving tone. “Vince Ferrari is getting formally charged today. I don’t want you blowing our case by lining up a bunch of ‘could have beens’ for his defense attorney to argue for.”

“I understand that sir,” Booker replied. “Which is why we are going to provide hard evidence against the real murderer.”

The sheriff snorted and shook his head. “You haven’t had enough, miss?” he aimed at Jenna.

She disliked Sheriff Lamb’s attitude and the way he dismissed anyone who wasn’t a white male. But he was from a time and place where such had been the norm, even if some progress was finally making it into the Kentucky hill country. She put on a sweet, southern smile.

“No, sir, Sheriff Lamb. You assigned the right deputy to this case, sure enough,” she confirmed with a nod. “We’ve already found four other credible suspects with no alibis and plenty of motive and opportunity. I’m sure we’ll find some evidence linking one of them to the crime—maybe even today!”

He let out a laugh, with tobacco-stained teeth showing between his lips. “I think you’re wasting your time, but I’ll let you hang with Booker ‘til the end of the week. Booker, if you haven’t got someone else to arrest before Monday, that’s it, boy. I’m going to need you to move on. We do have other matters to attend to, you know.”

“Yes, sir, Sheriff Lamb,” he replied with quiet confidence. “We’ll have someone by then; I’m sure of it.”

“That’s right,” Jenna agreed. “And I’ll have to get back to Roanoke by Monday, anyway. Don’t worry, Sheriff; Deputy Reid will make you proud.”

With a wink and a nod, he quipped, “More power to ya,” and backing out, let the door swing closed.

“Is it true you have to go back by Monday?” Booker asked softly.

“My captain didn’t specify, but I can’t stay on personal leave forever. I found something else in the report—a small thing, but still relevant.” Jenna took the seat across from him and opened the file, flipping to the trace evidence information. “It says here some
