“That stupid fool,” Pat said as he paced the living room. “Why in the hell would Sam give himself up like that?”

They’d seen William running toward the house, and Pat had known before William had said a word. Sage had freed William’s hands and had checked the man over, relieved that William hadn’t sustained any bruises or worse.

But Sam’s fate wouldn’t be so lucky. Pat couldn’t understand why Sam would go back to the man who’d tortured him for months and had broadcast the whole thing on a website. It didn’t make any sense to him.

“He did it for me,” William said. “And now we have to save Sam.”

“We don’t even know where they’re going,” Sage said.

“Then find out!” Pat shouted. “He sacrificed himself to save William. You can’t do any less for him.” He jammed his finger into Sage’s chest.

Pat knew he was walking a thin line with the way he was talking to Sage, but he didn’t care. All that mattered to him was getting Sam back. His heart was in his throat, and his stomach was knotting at what Martin could be doing to Sam at this very moment.

Pat was furious as hell that Sam had taken off like that. They could have gotten William back without Sam having to put his own life on the line.

“I saw which way they turned,” William said. “If you go now, you might be able to catch up to them.”

Pat was out the door before William finished what he was saying, Jeremiah and Isaac close behind. Sage joined them, and Mercy and Monterey stayed behind to keep an eye on things.

Pat hopped into the passenger side, and Sage pulled from the driveway in seconds. The long stretch of road was barren, not another vehicle in sight.

“You know there’s a chance we won’t find them,” Jeremiah said from the backseat of the truck. “I just don’t want you to get your hopes up, Pat.”

“All I have is hope,” Pat said as he twisted in his seat and glared at his friend. “So stop raining on my fucking parade.”

“I think I see something,” Sage said.

Pat turned back around and squinted. It was barely there, but he could see distant taillights. It could be Sam, or it could be some stranger driving down the road. He wasn’t going to get excited until he knew for sure.

Sage sped up.

Within minutes they’d caught up to a SUV. Pat still didn’t know if it was Sam or not. He got his answer soon enough when someone reached out the back window and fired at them.

“Son of a bitch!” Sage steered the truck left. Pat clutched his seat belt and held on for dear life.

“Ram him!” Isaac shouted.

Sage sped up again and smacked the front of his truck into the back of the SUV. The SUV slammed forward as Sage’s truck lurched back. The hood buckled slightly.

Sage jammed his foot into the floor, and his truck moved until they were side by side with the SUV.
