Between my breasts

The maiden’s breasts in the last phrase of verse 13 symbolize the “faith and love” she now possesses through union with her Beloved. Faith and love are mentioned six times throughout the Song: twice by her (1:13; 8:10), three times by her Beloved (4:5; 7:7; 7:8), and once by the daughters of Jerusalem (7:3). There must be a strong correlation between faith and love because these two words occur together in twenty-six verses in the New Testament. Let’s take a look at some of these:

“If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing” (1 Cor. 13:2).

“In Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love” (Gal. 5:6).

“But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love” (1 Thess. 5:8).

“The grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus” (1 Tim. 1:14).
