Ash walked his bike through the clearing, took off his Godzilla mask, put it in his back pocket, and wiped his eyes.

It was all he could take anymore. He didn’t know what he was going to do with the rest of his night, but he didn’t want to go home.

Something was hopping up and down on the trail in front of him, a crow, he saw, cawing and squawking in distress. Its wings beat, unable to fly.

Ash walked closer, wiped more tears from his eyes, and saw the crow was injured.

“Hey?” he asked. “Is something wrong?”

The bird hopped away from him. One wing was extended above its head, the other close by its side. The size of it spooked him. Ash was afraid to get closer, fearing it would peck out his eyes. There was something like fishing line around one wing and its talons. It was hard to tell in the dark, but something had it bound up.

Ash set his bike down and walked slowly toward the bird. “Easy,” he said. “Hold on, little guy. I’m not gonna hurt you.”

He knelt a few feet from the crow. It hopped away from him, cawing and squawking.

“Hold on,” Ash said. “It’s okay. I’m gonna help you. You’re just all tied up with something.”

The crow flapped its one wing and hopped around in a circle. Ash reached for it, and it jumped away from him again.

“Easy,” Ash said.

The bird was exhausted from flapping its one good wing, the twine around the other. Ash moved closer, managed to grab it, and the thing fought and squawked at him. Ash stroked its head softly, trying to calm it down.

After some time, it stopped fighting him. Ash held the bird carefully and inspected the twine.

The fishing line had gotten caught on its wing and was wrapped around its neck and talons. It was a mess.

“Easy,” Ash said. “I see what the trouble is. We’re gonna fix you right up, though. Okay? I’m gonna get you out of this.”

He didn’t have a pocketknife. He didn’t have anything but the Godzilla mask, which was still dangling from his back pocket. He found a loose end of the twine on its wing and tried to break it, but it was too strong. He looked at its talons, and the thing flapped and cawed again. Ash flinched, afraid it was trying to peck him.

“Easy,” Ash said. “You got yourself in a mess. Hold on.”

He was able to unwind the twine from its talons after some amount of time. It was difficult in the dark, but he managed with the glow of a nearby lamppost across the park. He found some slack in the fishing line and was able to separate it some more, then pull it apart from its wing. With both hands, he took the line and pulled as hard as he could. The twine finally snapped. After several minutes, Ash found the loose ends and managed to get the crow’s wing free. The bird sensed its freedom and flapped both wings.
