Chapter 14

By wordless and unanimous decision, Blythe did not meet Ezra Lugh directly that first day. Walters took charge of the Guard and held him at bay while Phink and Sly frog-marched her out of the hangar and proceeded with an impromptu campaign of distraction.

It almost worked, but no amount of good food and traipsing down memory lane with friends could keep her nightmares at bay. Blythe woke the next morning in a cold sweat by a harsh rapping on her guest room door. She gripped the doorknob with a nauseating certainty that Walters was waiting on the other side, ready to tell her Polaris had been arrested and taken away while she slept.

In truth, Walters was waiting for her just beyond the threshold, but Sly was with her. He wore a maniacal grin and kept bouncing on the balls of his feet while the old woman stood stern and composed at his side.

Blythe blinked at them as she rubbed the confusion from her face. “What’s going on?”

“Someone wants to see you,” Sly chirped. “Get dressed, lazy bones. It’s about time you introduce me to your vampire.”

Blythe’s weary brain skidded to a sluggish halt. It took a long moment for her to figure out what he meant, then she turned wide hopeful eyes on Walters.

“You’re letting me see her again?”

Walters’s eye twitched like she was forcing back the urge to roll her eyes. “Dr. Balint has determined she’s no risk to you. So long as that remains the case, neither of us see much point in keeping you apart.”

Blythe slammed the door in their faces and rushed to get dressed. She grabbed the first complete outfit she could find from the rake of get well gifts, then she was bounding down the hall in a deep-purple jumpsuit that managed to cover every inch of her skin save for her head, shoulders, and hands. It was suspiciously well-fitted to her frame, but she didn’t have time to dwell over the fact.

She didn’t second-guess the ensemble until Walters let her into the scion’s office. Polaris took one look at her and clapped both hands over her mouth, her eyes bulging as she dragged them over Blythe’s frame.

Blythe stalled out in the middle of the office with her arms half-raised in greeting. She might’ve stood there like an idiot forever if Sly didn’t pop up behind her.

“Hi! You must be Polaris. I’m Sly!”

The Nocturna recoiled. Her eyes narrowed on his face as her hands lowered, and her expression was wary as it flickered between Blythe and Sly.

Blythe jabbed her elbow into Sly’s side as she aimed an oversized smile at Polaris. “Hey, Hun. I missed you. By the way, this is Sly. I told you about him.”

Sly took a giant backstep and tucked his hands in his back pockets without losing his grin. “Whatever she’s told you, it’s probably true, but in my defense, she’s known since infancy.”

The room seemed to hold its breath as they waited for Polaris to respond. In the doorway, Blythe could feel Walters shifting as if to intervene.
