Mrs Batley’s voice broke in on her thoughts again. It was coming from the landing this time, and she seemed to be calling down into the hall. ‘He’s not up here, I knew he couldn’t be up here.’

Linda rose to her feet. Were they looking for Michael? Had something happened to the child? She remembered the look on his face, and she had opened the bedroom door and was on the point of stepping on to the landing when her employer’s voice checked her. It was coming from the direction of the stairs, and she heard him ask, ‘How long is it since he went out?’

‘About an hour or an hour and a half,’ came Mrs Batley’s reply.

On this Linda realised they were not talking of Michael but of Shane. Then Mrs Batley’s voice, holding a desperate note, said, ‘Oh, don’t say he’s gone down to the Bay. But I’d like to bet anything that’s where he is at this minute…Oh, after all this time to start again…I should have realised it, the way he left the house, there was that look on his face.’

‘And you’re blaming me.’ The words that Ralph Batley spoke were low and bitter.

‘No, I’m not, son, only I’m worried. If he gets bottled up he’ll never make his way along that cliff path, you know how he goes on, dancing and acting the goat…it’s a black, dark night. I’m worried, Ralph.’

Linda heard no more but she seemed to see the mother and son looking at each other. Then came the sound of Ralph Batley’s steps running down the stairs, and a few minutes later the back door banging told her that he was on his way to Surfpoint Bay and The Wild Duck.
