Rolling over, I tried to ignore the banging that was coming from the living room. I wanted to lose myself in sleep for just a bit longer. In sleep, it didn’t hurt as bad.

The ache, the longing for my other half. I could feel Amelia and Sin. Marcus was shielding me still. He couldn’t help the brief moments where the worry would slip through or the overwhelming sadness when he was asleep.

It didn’t make it any easier.

That combined with the hammering had pulled me out of sleep. The sunlight trickled through the curtains, painting the room in shadows.

Beneath the sheets that smelled of our coupling, I could pretend like yesterday hadn’t happened. Like my mate was still with me. Not trapped with the elders. Trapped with Vega, that she-beast who at times I wondered if she even had a heart.

I strongly doubted it.

She’d been witness to the things that had happened to me when I was a pet. Seen the way that Nash treated me. She’d seen how he had treated Sin, had used him. She had used him, and I feared that she would do the same with Marcus.

Pulling the blanket over my head, I tried to push away those thoughts. I didn’t need Marcus worrying about me anymore than he probably already was. I knew that I needed to get up, to talk with the flock.

“Louis,” April’s muffled voice called out through the door. “I know you’re awake.”

“No, I’m not.” I growled out, grabbing the pillow. Pulling it beneath the blanket to my chest.

The door swung open and April stepped into the room. Pushing the curtains open before pulling the blanket off of me.

“You need to get up, your mates need you. Your flock needs you.”

I glared at her before turning my face into my pillow with a growl. I didn’t need her telling me these things, I already knew them. It didn’t make them easier to do, knowing that I needed to do them. Already I could feel anxiety welling up in the pit of my stomach. Making my palms sweaty and my stomach clench up.

“Louis.” She pulled the pillow away from my face. Lifting an eyebrow as our eyes met.

“I know, I already know.”

“I know you do. Cherise made you breakfast. I fixed you coffee, James got a construction crew out to fix the roof.” She patted my shoulder, her lips falling into a sad smile at her next words. “We are your flock Louis, you are our leader.”

I closed my eyes, nodding. She was right, but it was only til Marcus came home. I had to keep things together, so he’d have a flock to return to. “Thank you.”

“Don’t mention it. Now, hurry up before James tries to steal your fancy coffee.” She said moving to my closet.

“April, I can get dressed on my own.”

“I know you can, but if I’m in here, maybe you’ll hurry up. You’ve got a lot to do with little time to get it done.”

After breakfast, I got into my car.
