Chapter Seven

Grey had acknowledged that Wallace would still be asleep, even as he had punched the agent’s home number into the cellular phone. And he suspected Joe wouldn’t be any too happy to be getting this particular call, not at any time of the day, but especially before dawn. He had been right in both suppositions.

After this fiasco, however, he wouldn’t be getting any more business from Joe Wallace anyway. All it would take would be one conversation between the insurance agent and Val Beaufort, and that would pretty much be a done deal.

“Because she kicked me out,” Grey said in response to Joe’s bewildered question. He had delivered the news that Wallace needed to round up a replacement without offering any explanation as to why, but he should have known the agent wouldn’t let it go at that. “I’ll hang around until you get somebody else out here, but you better make it quick.”

“Who am I going to get at…” There was a pause while Wallace checked the time. “At five frigging o’clock in the morning? What the hell do you think—”

“The security system should be installed in a day or two.” Grey interrupted the stream of profanities. “Until then get the security guard from the grocery store. Hire a rent-a-cop. Or come baby-sit Ms. Beaufort yourself. I don’t give a damn how you manage it. Just get somebody out here and do it now.”

“What’d you do to make her kick you off the place?”

“I pissed the lady off. It wasn’t all that hard. Ms. Beaufort’s got a few hang-ups.”

Grey regretted the words as soon as he said them. They felt like a betrayal, although technically, he supposed they were true. Of course, Grey recognized that he had a few hang-ups as well. He just wasn’t announcing his to Joe Wallace.

“Hang-ups like what?” Joe asked, sounding more interested.

“Like thinking somebody’s after her money,” Grey said.

That was enough of an explanation. All he was prepared to give, in any case. He knew Wallace would eventually get an earful from Val about the rest.

“Considering how much of it there is,” Joe said finally, “she probably ain’t wrong about that.”

“Get somebody,” Grey ordered again.

“You’re still out there, aren’t you? Hell, you haven’t gone off and left her alone, have you?” Joe said, sounding disturbed.

“I’m on a ridge looking down on the ranch. She told me to get off her property, and I did. I’ll hang around a while, but give it another couple of hours, when the sun gets good and high, and it’s going to be mighty uncomfortable up here.”

“I can’t just manufacture somebody to take your place. You gotta give me a little time.”

“That’s exactly what I’m giving you,” Grey said. “A little time. You want her protected, you get your ass in gear and find somebody before my nose gets sunburned.”

He punched the button on the cell phone, cutting off Wallace’s protests. He knew he was putting the agent in a bad position, but he couldn’t help it. Joe had said there was nothing to this assignment.
