Dear Cousin Anne,

I am so heartened to hear of your improvement, although it makes me quite angry that your mother and her doctor kept you ill for so long. I’m glad you’re pleased with the work of your new servants and that the food is satisfactory. I will be quite interested when I visit to taste the African foods and to meet your staff. If I come across a mare who is known for her kind and gentle disposition, I will be sure to let you know. The Bennets have a female offspring that resulted from an inadvertent mating between the mare belonging to Miss Mary and one of Mr. Goulding’s horses. However, I am unaware if the Bennets wish to keep the horse, or any details about the temperament of the sire. I shall inquire. I remember it being an attractive animal, dark brown with white stockings.

I cannot write very much, for Richard’s engagement ball is to-night. I am certain it shall go off well, for I cannot imagine a party planned by our aunt being anything less than perfect. I shall dance the first and the supper set with Miss E. I think everything goes well. I have no reason to think otherwise. I know not what to tell you, cousin. I think she likes me very well and I have every reason to think her opinion continues to improve. Shall I write of our every interaction? Shall I describe what I said when I complimented her that caused her to blush?
