Chapter 6

One date turned into three, then four. They finally made it to the movies. They went to the park again, and spent a morning at the farmers’ market. Jakob never pressed. He seemed to know when Alan needed to be left alone and when he needed company. The only thing he was adamant about was safety. They wouldn’t go anywhere if Alan didn’t wear the seatbelt, so Alan learned to deal with it. Jakob’s company helped settle his nerves, and eventually he barely noticed the dreaded thing.

On their fourth date, Jakob finally kissed him. It wasn’t like anything Alan had experienced before. It was sweet and gentle—a little brush of lips that enflamed his senses and blood. And that one kiss made Alan want more.

On the fifth date, he kissed Jakob back. Afraid he would lose his nerve, he jumped on Jakob as soon as he saw him. When the shock wore off, Jakob laughed and pulled him closer, kissing him hungrily. This time, he wasn’t gentle. He nibbled and sucked and teased at the seam of Alan’s lips, demanding entrance. The first touch of tongues left Alan breathless and hungry for more, but Jakob didn’t take things further.

Alan fretted again. And again.

Then he started dreaming. Not the Nicholas nightmares, but wet dreams starring Jakob. In the morning, he woke up horny and restless. And for the first time since moving to the city, he touched himself. He stroked his cock, thinking of Jakob. And when he spilled, it was Jakob’s name he cried out.

“Hi, Zack. Come on in.”

Alan stepped aside, inventing him in. Zack had become a regular at Lucas’s home, and in his bed, over the past few weeks.

“Lucas isn’t here.”

“Yeah, I know. I wanted to talk to you.” Zack closed the door but remained by the entrance, his expression grim.

Alan frowned, stomach sinking. “What’s going on? Has something happened with Lucas?” He wanted to know, but at the same time, he didn’t.

“It’s Nicholas. Come. Sit down.” Zack guided him to the couch. “His trial has been scheduled.”

“Okay?”

“You will have to testify.”

From the moment he’d woken in hospital and heard Zack tell him they’d apprehended Nicholas, Alan had known this moment would come. And he still wasn’t ready. He had pushed the thought, the fear, to the back of his mind. Now, the running was done. Could he face it? Could he be in the same room with Nicholas, and the judge, and everyone else, and tell them what he had gone through?

“When?”

“Two weeks from now. I just got word.”

“Is there anything I should know, or do, before that?”

He’d have to face Nicholas again. He wasn’t sure when Ted had turned into Nicholas in his mind, but at some point he had. Perhaps when Alan had started falling for Jakob.

“You will have to come down to the precinct and go through your statement. Or we can do it here if that’s easier for you.”

“Okay.”

“You have to understand that we wouldn’t do this if it wasn’t necessary. We need to put him behind bars.
