Chapter Ten
Remembering Nathan
More than a hundred years old, the huge red brick manor house had been built in order to take care of society's outcasts: the elderly, the poverty-stricken, and the mentally ill.
After serving its purpose for the better part of a century, it was ignominiously shut down and abandoned. The hallways and corridors, which had once bustled with life, were now dark and silent. All of the patients and the staff members that had cared for them were gone, leaving medical records and personal belongings scattered all around.
The building was now left to its ghosts, and those who sought to find them.
Emma was fascinated with the place. She enjoyed walking the halls, immersing herself in the quiet, somber atmosphere. If only these walls could talk, she reflected, wandering in and out of the empty rooms which had until just a few years ago been somebody's home.
Those people had left behind mementos of their time at the manor. Here, a faded photograph was taped to a cabinet door; there, an old sweat-shirt lay discarded in the corner of a room. Signs of those who had, in some cases, lived most of their adult lives inside this place. Emma could feel the energy that had remained long after the people themselves had gone.
The manor may have been abandoned, but it was far from being truly empty.
She knew that some had wrestled with their personal demons: addiction, mental illness, and chronic disease. Countless people had also died here, breathing their last in one of the many beds that were still to be found in a number of the rooms. As a tangible reminder of that, a cemetery could still be found just outside the grounds. Its tombstones had faded after so many years of exposure to the elements, but the graveyard was otherwise neatly kept, the grass trimmed and the trash picked up at regular intervals. It was a peaceful place, and Emma enjoyed the sense of tranquility she felt when walking there.
She had arranged to spend a night carrying out a paranormal investigation at the ramshackle old building. Before setting out, Emma had made a point of doing her homework, delving into the history of the location. She noted with interest that it was not the first structure to have been built on that site. A 'Poor Farm' had previously occupied that spot, until it had been torn down in order to make way for the newer facility. If you were destitute or mentally ill, and your family happened to be either unwilling or unable to take care of you, then the Poor Farm was essentially your only other option, other than living rough on the streets. It offered a structured life, with regular meals, a roof over your head, and some degree of social interaction; in return, you were expected to work on the farm from dawn until dusk.
Emma decided to select one of the residents at random from the historical records, and see whether she could connect with him in some way during her investigation.
