AIRFIELD MYSTERIES

IT is rumoured that phantom planes fly over the old Davidstow airfield, a few miles outside Camelford. They are usually heard in the early hours of the morning. A former RAF pilot said he was not surprised they should fly there at night as bomber pilots had found landing in the low cloud difficult after exhausting flights over German-occupied Europe during the war.

The highest airfield in Britain, Davidstow opened in October 1942 and closed in December 1945. Opened by the RAF, it was first used by the Americans, then in 1943 Polish pilots were stationed here with the RAF. The following year the Royal Canadian Air Force was based here and in 1945 the Royal Air Force Regiment arrived.

Today, Davidstow Moor is the haunt of thousands of birds, and large numbers of ponies and sheep graze hereabouts. The Davidstow Airfield and Cornwall at War Museum, dedicated to the history of RAF Davidstow Moor and the three services in Cornwall, is a valuable asset for locals and visitors. It also has the air of the supernatural about it.

When thirteen members of Paranormal Investigation came to the museum in October 2008, we all agreed that there is a powerful sense of the past enriched with strong undercurrents and emotions. So much so that several members admitted they were quite exhausted at the end of our five-hour visit.

We were, in fact, following famous footsteps in that Arthur C. Clarke, the celebrated writer of science fiction who pioneered radar ground control, was at Davidstow as an instructor. General Eisenhower, later President of the United States, came here meeting American airmen, and Guy Gibson of Dam Buster fame made an inspection of the station but preferred the dinner and overnight accommodation of the Wellington Hotel at Boscastle. It is believed that Noel Coward was another celebrity visitor.

Anyway, medium Pamela Smith-Rawnsley made contact with a 23-year-old soldier killed in the Korean War. He knew a member of the local Sandercock family and acknowledged the inspiring leadership of Colonel Carne of the Gloucesters.
