It is thought that he was an assistant manager who worked there in the 1920s and who, one day, failed to turn up for work. He seems to have cleared his rented room and left Chatham in a great hurry, only for his spectre to return a few weeks later.

Sadly, Matthews cites no sources for this information, or for the other ghost stories he mentions regarding the theatre. The author also mentions the ghost of the Green Man, a figure said to haunt one of the boxes which overlooks the stage. He remarks that: ‘This phantom is dressed all in green: green suit, green tie, green shirt and presumably, if they could be seen, green shoes.’ According to Matthews there is also the spirit of an old lady who has allegedly been seen on the ground floor, and furthermore he claims that the ghost of a young girl has been spotted near the toilets.
