CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

KANA

The howling of the hunting wolf pack had kept me awake long after my watch had officially ended, and I was grouchy when I woke up to Kas sitting alone near the opening of the cave.

“Where’s Valentina?” I asked, cracking my neck as I stretched my way out of the tiny tent and glanced around the cave.

“She scented another team up the mountain and went to spy on them. She didn’t want help,” he added, shrugging. I narrowed my eyes. That was suspicious of her. As a royal from the city, she probably knew quite a few of the competitors.

“Did she leave the map here?” I asked, and Kas nodded, holding it up.

“She’ll be back, princess. Don’t worry.”

“Almost sounds like you trust her, thief. Is that hard, to trust a royal?” I asked, being a bitch because I felt like it.

Kas arched an eyebrow, the motion tugging at his scar. “I don’t trust any of you.”

I slid him half a smile and dropped my voice in case Louis was awake. “Yet you’d slip your cock between my fangs.”

Kas grunted. “You’d never-”

“I have before,” I said lightly, keeping the memory tightly in its cage as Kas gaped at me. “The one and only time someone tried to force that on me. I paid for it in blood and pain later, but it was well worth it.” I flashed my fangs at him and he shuddered.

Then I gave him a teasing look. “You’d still collect on that bet, though, wouldn’t you? Even after hearing that?”

Kas laughed and shook his head, but said, “You’re not fucking wrong, princess.”

There was more to what he wanted to say - I could sense the words blockaded in his mind even without my magic. But he didn’t speak them, and before I could tease further, Valentina appeared around the bend.

“It wasn’t Matthieu’s team. And it wasn’t that huge vampire either,” she added, looking at Kas.

Kas nodded and looked at me. “I described your big motherfucker for her.”

“Is he a noble?” Valentina asked, narrowing her eyes at me.

I shook my head. “Luca’s family worked at the palace. I’ve known him since we were kids.”

“Friends?” Valentina asked, the question like a knife casually slipped against my spine.

“No. And he’s not my motherfucker. He’s just another dick from my past,” I added, glaring at Kas and refusing to think of the sexy dream I'd had starring Luca. Whatever was in my tone satisfied Valentina, and she continued describing the others she’d seen. It sounded like the fourth team I’d seen heading into the mountains, which meant the only ones we hadn’t seen yet were Luca and his team.

“Anyways, it doesn’t matter who they are because they’re retreating. I managed to get Giselle’s attention - I’ve met her at court a few times. She told me they’d been tracking that other team - not Matthieu’s - but they lost the trail yesterday trying to keep away from the wolves. Now they’re going back to the city,” she finished.

“They’re giving up?” Louis breathed, having come out of his tent during her explanation.
