Chapter Twenty-Three

“What just happened?” Laura breathed.

I rested a firm hand on her shoulder so that there was no confusion about the fact that we needed to be deathly silent. Without turning her head, she reached up and squeezed my fingers in an icy vice grip of terror.

The entire Gigantopithecus tribe faced away from us as Alpha calmly moved out of the jungle and back into the clearing. His walk was slightly lopsided.

Then I realized that he was carrying his opponent’s head. The ape’s unseeing eyes gazed forward in a shocked expression over its wide-open mouth. Blood and gore dripped from the shredded neck.

Alpha stepped amongst his tribe without making a sound. His teeth were stained red.

Then he screamed, beat his chest once, and threw the defeated beast’s head across the open space like it was a baseball. It bounced, sending a crimson spray into the air, before rolling behind a bush.

No other Gigantopithecus moved.

Then Alpha grabbed Kristen’s tree. With a few quick grips of his merciless hands, he pulled himself up to the branches where she sat, shivering amongst the leaves. My blood boiled as he pressed an oversized, ugly face toward her naked body while she leaned away. Flashing a row of enormous stained teeth between his impossibly large canines, Alpha exhaled sharply. Kristen’s hair flew back as she gripped the trunk to keep herself from plummeting to the jungle floor far below.

Alpha licked his lips.

My gut curdled.

A scream from one of the other Gigantopithecuses snapped everyone’s attention across the clearing. I turned my head to see a smaller, graying ape cradling the head that Alpha had ripped apart. This Gigantopithecus looked to be older and probably female.

It almost looked like she was the victim’s mother.

She rocked the severed head back and forth as though trying to rouse a baby. When that failed, she let out a long, low wail of agony that shook my core.

Now distracted, Alpha turned away from Kristen. Relief washed over me as he climbed down the tree to approach the source of his interruption.

The female continued her painful cries as Alpha descended on her. She gave no indication that she was aware of his presence at all.

That was clearly a mistake. Alpha balked upon not being recognized by a member of the tribe, but her grief was obviously too powerful for her to see or feel anything else.

He grunted. She didn’t look.

Alpha swung his battering ram of an arm against the back of her skull. She crumpled immediately, dropping the head. It rolled into the water and tumbled downstream along the rocks.

Then Alpha turned around to face a tribe that stared back at him with unwavering focus. The tension between him and the rest of the crew was powerful enough to smell.

He roared. The great ape screamed so loudly that the jungle buzzed with the silence that followed. Nothing from the tiniest insect to the greatest of apes dared to make a sound in response.

That included us.

Alpha gazed at every corner, every leaf, every hidden shadow in search of the first being that would challenge his stature as the most violent.
