Chapter Thirteen

Gloria emerged from the bathroom smelling and feeling like she was a flower raised in a greenhouse. Lo must have heard the bathroom door open because she appeared in the corridor.

“Go put on your new dress.”

“What for?”

“Let’s get dressed up.”

Gloria wiped moisture from under her chin with the corner of the towel she was holding around herself. “I just want to put my sweatpants and robe on.”

“It’s Christmas Eve. I want you to put your dress on so I can unwrap you like a present.”

“Can’t you unwrap my robe? I’ll tie the belt in a bow.”

“Put some makeup on too. I’m going to have a quick shower, then I’m coming to check on you.”

Lo gave Gloria a stern look and moved around her to get into the bathroom. She shut the door and Gloria shook her head. She wasn’t sure what had gotten into Lo. Maybe it was one of the self-help books she’d been reading. Surely they weren’t at the stage where their sex life was stale, as it had only just started. Gloria contemplated putting on her comfortable clothes but couldn’t bring herself to disappoint Lo when she was trying so hard to do something nice. Instead, she sat down in front of the vanity with her robe on—temporarily only—and did her makeup. By the time Lo reappeared, Gloria was in the dress and shoes, combing her hair in front of the mirror. Outside, the sun was slipping behind the mountains, striking the window with hard pink light, making it impossible to make out the pastures below.

Lo smiled. “You look beautiful. I must have been good after all because Santa is giving me exactly what I asked for.”

“What else did you ask for?”

“Only world peace and that I not encounter Judge Belvedere next year. Now, what about me?” She opened the closet. “This green one?” She pulled the hem of her olive-green silk dress out to show Gloria.

“What’s that red one?”

Lo unhooked a knee-length dark red dress with a split up the side. “A bit sexy don’t you think? Peter bought me this one but I never actually wore it. It probably doesn’t fit.”

Gloria’s eyes narrowed. “Too sexy for what? For me to unwrap like my present? It looks exactly like a gift to me. Try it on.”

Lo slipped the dress from its hanger and threw her towel on the bed. Her body had already begun to harden into the athletic form of a swimmer. The dress fit her easily, diving down her cleavage, clinging to her torso and falling loose along her thigh until she moved and the fabric parted like a theater curtain, showing the length of her left leg. The bright red fabric clashed beautifully with the orange tones of her hair.

“Excuse me,” Gloria said. “Chanel called, they want their cover girl back.”

“It’s not too Pretty Woman-ish?”

“No, just enough. You need some diamonds, though.”

Lo grinned. “You’re on board then?”

“I’ve been on board all afternoon, I’m just not sure what for!”

“Soon, my darling, soon.”

There was more yelling and banging outside.
