Chapter Five
Hannah was playing outside right after breakfast when Mrs. Jones drove up in her buggy. She ran across the grass to the road and helped Mrs. Jones tie her horse to the hitching post in front of the house. Mrs. Jones was wearing a big white apron, and her dark hair was all pinned up and out of the way. She looked ready to work.
âDid you come to wish us a happy week-iversary?â Hannah asked.
Mrs. Jones smiled. âI donât think so because I donât know what a week-iversary is, dear.â
âWell, you know how you wish someone a happy anniversary when theyâve been married for a year? Weâve been in Topeka for a whole week now, so itâs our week-iversary,â Hannah told her.
âOh, I see. Thatâs certainly a long word, isnât it? Did you make it up?â
âYes, I did, and I know how to spell it too.â
âGood. Spellingâs very important.â Mrs. Jones nodded toward the house. âLetâs go help your mother, all right?â
Doing laundry was so much harder than Hannah had imagined it would be. The house they were renting had come with several large buckets and washtubs, thank goodness, so they didnât have to buy those. Mrs. Jones helped them drag everything out to the backyard.
âNow, I asked Mr. Jones, and he said there was a boiler out here,â Mrs. Jones said, looking around with her hands on her hips.
âA boiler?â Hannahâs mother asked.
âYesâa giant pot. And we need to start a fire.â
âA fire?â
âYes, to boil the water.â Mrs. Jones smiled at Hannahâs mother. âIâm afraid weâre in for a very long day, my dear. Laundry is simply the most arduous task I can think of for a woman to do.â
Hannahâs mother pressed her lips together, and for a small second, Hannah thought she might cry. But then she blinked and nodded. âThen weâd best get to it. I have a lot to learn today.â
âThatâs the right spirit. Youâre going to do very well here, Clarissa,â Mrs. Jones said.
Hannah was glad that her mother had a friend to call her Clarissa again. It was such a lovely princess-like name.
Now, where would a giant pot be? They couldnât get started without it.
Hannah put her hands on her hips and started looking around just like Mrs. Jones. Hmm. The only place it really could be was in the shed.
She ran over and looked. No, the left side of the shed was Goliathâs. Thatâs where his extra saddle blanket and all his brushes were kept. But what about over on the right side?
A lot of hay had been piled up in the corner. As Hannah walked closer to it, a rat ran out and scampered across her foot, and she squealed. The rat made a chattering sound and kept running. It was cute, but it would have been cuter if it hadnât scared her.
Yes, there was a big pot under that pile of hayâsheâd guessed right. âI found it!â she called out.
Hannahâs mother and Mrs. Jones came into the shed, and all three of them worked together to drag the pot outside.
