Portentia stepped out from the shadows of Albemarle Street, a long coat wrapped around her, protecting her from the cold night. She reached into her pocket and took out a phone.

The person at the other end answered and said nothing. Just waited for her to speak.

“We have a problem,” she said. “The Wormling is here. He must know something.”

“How could he know? Can you get to him?”

“They’ve gone in. How far away are you?”

“Not far,” he said. “Don’t worry. Our shadowy friends are preparing to strike. They’ll deal with the boy. And his assistant. And yours.”

There was a pause. Then Portentia asked, “What shall I do?”

“Wait for me outside. We can’t risk you going in till all threats are neutralized. Leave it to the shadows . . .”

“Very well,” she said, and hung up. Portentia reached into her pocket and pulled out her pack of cards.

She looked up at the Hangman’s Club. From outside, it looked like all the other houses on the street. A patch of darkness flashed across her vision, as though a cloud had moved across a moonlit sky. The Shadowfolk had already begun to arrive.

She flipped over the top card.

Death.

Yes, it was probably best to wait outside.
