Once the family heard Eli’s time on earth would end at six o’clock, they rallied around him again, sharing the same tearful goodbyes and expressions of regret as before. To Beau, it all seemed so pointless. Eli didn’t even know they were there. They shed tears and spoke wistful words for their own benefit, not for Eli. Not really, anyway. He tried to appreciate their points of view, but his insides had turned to stone. He sat in the corner of his brother’s room, thinking about what he might say if he could see all this from the outside. He wondered if Eli would hate him. He wondered if Eli would maintain that chronically happy persona if he knew his own brother had killed him. Beau had already forgotten how to feel happiness, his emotions were in tatters. He thought about watching his twin take his last breaths at six o’clock, mere hours away. As he looked at his brother, his mind traveled back in time to when they were six years old, and Eli had saved him from falling off the footbridge in the park. They were never supposed to be there in the first place, but Beau had insisted and, when he lost his footing trying to climb over the rope railing, Eli had been there to pull him back. Eli had always been there to pull him back from the ledge.

The last two hours with Eli were reserved for immediate family, but Joe and Valerie wanted Ivy and Pete to stay until the last hour. The five of them sat in Eli’s room, looking at him and at each other. Ivy wept, watching the clock with a sense of dread that made it difficult for her to focus on Eli, which filled her with guilt. Her parents were waiting for her down the hall, and for the first time since the ordeal began, she wanted nothing more than to be in her mother’s arms. Pete was a rock. He poured waters, procured chairs, and fielded calls from friends and distant family. He made the occasional trip down the hall to brief the waiting grandparents, James, and the Zellways. If he were breaking, he didn’t show it.

When the clock struck five, Ivy stood and walked over to Eli’s bed. She brushed her fingers over his cheek and leaned down to kiss him, one last time. She then turned to where Valerie sat by Eli’s bed, holding his hand through the slats in his bed rail. She bent down and hugged Valerie’s neck, breathing in her sweet smell and mourning the loss of a lifetime as mother and daughter-in-law that they would no longer share. Somehow, through the course of this day, Ivy had abandoned her hope. Her faith now wavered like a reed in the wind. She moved from Val to Joe, who returned her embrace with a warm hug and a quick peck to her forehead.

The gesture caused her eyes to fill with tears once again.

Pete stood and followed suit.
