20.5.1 Comparison Synthetic vs. Naturalistic Experiment

To evaluate if there are differences in peoples' capacity to interpret synthetic and naturalistic emotional expressions, a further data elaboration was performed. Single analysis was performed for each age group, comparing young, middle-aged, and seniors who saw synthetic emotional expressions with young, middle-aged, and seniors who saw naturalistic emotional expressions, respectively. For each age group, ANOVA repeated measures analyses were conducted for each emotion category considering participants' group (synthetic and naturalistic) and gender as between-subject factors, and age, gender, and stimulus type (static and dynamic) as within-subject factors. The significance level adopted was α < 0.05; Bonferroni's post-hoc tests were used to analyze differences in means. Table 20.8 shows main effects from the analysis.
