Chapter twenty-one

Forever

Sage slid into the seat beside me, grinning from ear to ear. “Where’s Gar?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted, frowning. “He was already gone when I woke up this morning.”

Unusual.

Sage rolled her eyes playfully. “Calm down, Thea. He’s fine.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Do you know where he is?”

“If I knew, would I be asking you?”

“But you know something,” I pushed, stealing one of the tarts off her plate.

She swatted at my hand—too late—but quickly devolved into soft laughter. “Maybe,” she drawled.

I quit pushing when Roderick and Lorenzo arrived, sliding into the seats across from us. As close as Gar and I had grown, there was still a long road ahead for me and his friends.

Roderick was alright—though quite annoying. He pestered Sagira now, and her swatting at him was not as half-hearted as it had been with me. Still, it made me smile.

Lorenzo was his polar opposite—stoic and cold. He’d yet to warm to me and always watched me suspiciously with those bright, green eyes. I wondered if he resented me for not being Gar’s first wife or perhaps thought I attempted to fill her shoes.

I tried not to think about it.

I could feel myself growing restless, my foot tapping against the wood floor.

But then the front door of Oxcroft Keep opened, cool fall air rushing in behind him. And there he stood, just as beautiful as the first day I’d met him.

Gar, with a smile only for me turning his lips. He didn’t even bother coming over to the table. He only grinned and nodded me over.

I was out of my seat in a blink, Sage giggling from where I left her at the table.

Gar wound his fingers into my own, pressing a long, lingering kiss to my lips. “Hi,” he murmured against me.

“Hi,” I whispered back.

He kissed me once more on my forehead and then pulled me out onto the front steps of the keep. Fall was in full swing. The leaves were a myriad of colors, some already fallen to the ground. A crisp bite was in the air, one that was welcome as it brushed against my skin.

I followed along happily until we reached the gates—without a horse—and he led us outside. “Where are we going?”

He only smiled.

Nervous jitters—the lovely kind—flitted through me.

But he only led me a short walk to the west into a thicket of red and gold trees. They broke into a small, circular clearing. The faded grass was already littered with crinkling leaves. And in the center—

“Gar,” I rasped.

He leaned down, kissing my cheek.

In the center—directly beneath a shaft of sunlight—was a large quilt laden with an excessive amount of pillows. Red, gold, orange, and yellow—as if to match the leaves. Chilled wine, blankets, bread, jams, cheeses.

“What is this?” I croaked, tears filling my eyes.

His arms banded around my waist from behind. He nuzzled into my neck, whispering, “You’ve been working so hard—and we have to go soon. I thought you’d enjoy an easy day.”

The tears slid free, warming my cheeks.

A gentle kiss against my neck.
