Let’s do another one for practice, and let’s try a minor this time. How about G minor? Take a few minutes to figure it out yourself, and, when you’re done, have a look at my version and see if you got all the names correct for your new crew.
In G minor, we end up with two friends who need renaming. First, the A♯ is renamed B♭; second, the D♯ is renamed E♭. The key signature of G minor is therefore B♭ and E♭. It’s worth noting that in both major and natural minor scales, you’ll only ever have sharps or flats, never both. In other words, your key signatures consist of either sharps or flats. This will help keep you on the right path: if you’re working out a major or natural minor scale and end up with both sharps and flats, then something must’ve gone wrong somewhere. Double-check the formula and count those intervals again. Now that everyone’s here and happy with their names and individuality, we can continue respectfully, sans confusion.
