Chapter 5
Multimedia
Multimedia includes several forms which can be virtually anything that can be seen and heard, such as music, pictures, sound, records, videos, animations etc. These days, web pages include multimedia elements of various formats and types to look more engaging. In this chapter, we will introduce you to some popular multimedia formats.
Initially, the web browsers only supported the text and were limited to just a single font in the single color. Then, browsers are updated with support for various fonts and colors and even pictures. Different browsers now support the animations, sounds and videos. They support different formats with extra plug-ins. HTML5 promises bright multimedia future for the users.
Adding Media
Multimedia Formats
Certain elements like videos or sounds are saved in media files and file extension describes the type of file. If the file is saved with .htm or .html, it will be treated as HTML file by the browser. Similarly, .css is treated as style sheet file and .xml is treated as XML file. This way, extensions like .png, .gif and .jpg describe the images. Multimedia files have different extensions like .wav, .mp3, .swf, .mp4, .wmv, .mpg, and .avi.
Popular Video Formats
For online video, mp4 is the most popular and new format which is also recognized by YouTube and supported by HTML5 and Flash Players. Here are other popular video formats which may or may not be supported in web browsers.
MPEG (.mpg or .mpeg) – It is the first video format popularized over the web. Developed by Moving Pictures Expert Group, MPEG is supported by virtually all browsers but not in HTML5.
