Employees are increasingly prioritizing well-being. HR leaders need to respond accordingly by ensuring that existing well-being programs have higher participation rates and by fundamentally redesigning work and people processes to create a human-centric culture with empathy at its core.
With more technology entering the workplace, employees are facing difficulties in dividing their attention and are constantly being disrupted and distracted. With the added workloads, there is simply not enough time in a day, which makes employees see no other solution than to multitask. However, multitasking can have detrimental effects on well-being. Fragmenting attention and increasing the cognitive load can lead to decreased productivity, heightened stress levels, and reduced enjoyment of activities. Prioritizing monotasking and practicing mindfulness techniques can help promote well-being by fostering focus, reducing stress, and enhancing the overall satisfaction in the lives of employees.
Focus time is important for employees, because it allows them to work more productively and efficiently, reduces stress and burnout, and helps to improve their overall well-being. Encouraging employees to take regular breaks and to have dedicated focus time can lead to higher levels of productivity, creativity, and job satisfaction.
There is also a limit to be considered for how much data can be collected and for what purpose. The question remains: does the responsibility of health and well-being lie with the employee or the employer, or is there enough mutual trust for a joint effort? Leveraging more technology can increase productivity and free up employeeâs time. As organizations and as society, we need to decide whether this time will be used for more work or more leisure.
