Her words pierced the melody of the record; the wisps and scratches vanished. It was as though a company of jazz musicians had formed just at light’s edge, just beyond sight.

Fellows did not speak French, nor had he heard the song before. He guessed it was a lament over some departed lover. A torch she carried beyond his death and her abandonment. Her eyes were closed, her face contorted in pain. In the pause before the next refrain she swayed and one of her hands reached out towards the light. Fellows looked at his drink, not for the first time he wished there was ice in it, or anywhere else in the godforsaken village of Eau Claire.
