CHAPTER ELEVEN
The next morning at school I saw Autumn Hockney walking toward me in the hall when I was on my way to my locker to hang up my jacket. Before I could even begin to worry about whether she was going to come over and talk to me about going to the movies again, she turned around and walked quickly in the opposite direction. In Latin class she stared straight ahead the whole time and didnât even flip her hair.
Then at lunch something really weird happened. Buzz and I were just sitting down at our favorite table by the window when Lana Zuckerman walked by and made a mean face at me.
âWhat was that all about?â asked Buzz.
âI have no idea,â I said.
Lana is Autumnâs best friend. They always hang out after school, and they usually sit together at lunch at the big round table in the corner. I looked over, and sure enough, there they were. Autumn had her back to me, but Lana was looking right at me shooting darts out of her eyes in my direction. I quickly turned away.
âGirls are so whacked,â said Buzz. âItâs a waste of time to try to figure them out. They donât even know what theyâre thinking themselves half the time.â
âYeah,â I said, but I couldnât help wondering what was going on. Had I done something to make Lana mad? Or Autumn? What could it be?
âSo, did you fax the letter?â asked Buzz, changing the subject.
I felt a wet, stinging splat hit the back of my neck.
âOuch!â I said, putting my hand up to the spot. I pulled a little wad of wet paper off my neck.
âSpitball,â said Buzz, examining it.
I turned around and looked for Lana. She was still sitting with Autumn, but she wasnât looking at me anymore. In fact, she almost seemed to be avoiding meeting my eye, and a mean little smile played at the corners of her mouth. There was no doubt in my mind that she was the one who had blown the spitball at me.
âI donât get it,â I said.
âGirls,â said Buzz with disgust.
