Chapter Seven
Coming awake to the sound of raucous guffaws, Wren frowned as he blinked to expel the bleariness of sleep from his eyes. The only light in the room came from the glow of the television, and his confused scowl morphed into a crooked grin when he realized the laughter was coming from an old 1950s sitcom. He hadnât pegged his mate for an I Love Lucy fan.
âWhat time is it?â
Stretched out beside him in the bed with his head propped up on at least four pillows, Thorne turned the beside lamp on then rolled over to face him. âA little after ten.â His smile was gentle as he brushed the hair back from Wrenâs face. âHow are you feeling?â
âGood, I think, butâ¦weird? Kind of groggy but amped up at the same time.â
âWhenâs the last time you ate?â
âIââ He honestly couldnât remember.
Thorne huffed. âIâll order us something. What are you hungry for?â
âCaesar salad, with grilled chicken and extra croutons. Oh, and a bowl of vegetable soup.â He thought about it for a moment. âAnd a chocolate chip cookie.â
âOddly specific, but Iâm on it.â After stealing a quick kiss, Thorne pushed himself up from the bed and settled down in the rolling chair at the small desk in the corner. âWhy donât you jump in the shower while I order?â
After everything that had happened, they should probably talk, but he couldnât deny that a hot shower sounded like absolute heaven. âGood idea. Give me two minutes.â
âTake your time,â Thorne said, picking up the phone and pressing the number for room service. âBecause youâre right. We do need to talk, and I donât want you distracted.â
Rolling his eyes, Wren dragged himself out of bed, grabbed a set of pajamas from his bag, then plodded into the attached bathroom. While he loved the connection they shared, it was still going to take some time to get used to it. Hell, there was barely room in his head for him, let alone someone else.
So far, it didnât seem to be too bad, not really. From what he could gather, he only heard Thorne through their connection when his mate wanted him to. He wondered if the same was true in reverse.
Could Thorne only hear him when he projected? Or was his mate receiving the brunt of every trivial thought that crossed his mind? Could Thorne hear him right then? If he could, then he surely would have said something. Hmm, maybe he should check. Then again, if he asked, it would kind of defeat the purpose of the experiment.
âI can only hear your âtrivialâ thoughts when youâre thinking about me.â
Well, crap. Bad luck for Thorne, because he thought about him a lot.
The laughter that came back to him was soft as a whisper but full of so much happiness it made his heart ache. Damn, Thorne had a great laugh, but he didnât use it nearly often enough. Wren was determined to change that.
But first, a shower.
Peeling off his work clothes, he wrinkled his nose as he tossed them into a pile on the floor in the corner of the bathroom.
