Griff

When he returned to the bar after tucking Sam into his bed, he’d expected Ares to be pissed at him but there was only concern in the man’s eyes.

“He gonna be okay?” Ares asked, and there was no doubt who he was referring to.

“The hangover’s gonna kick his ass but, other than that, I think he’ll be alright.”

A snort had him glancing behind Ares to find Jace pretending to be cleaning glasses behind the bar.

“You got something you need to say, Jace?”

Jace snapped his gaze up, his eyes blazing with anger. The Jace in front of him was such a far cry from the Jace who’d been under Ronin’s thumb. He was starting to stand up for himself more and more and despite being the one he was directing that ire at, he was proud of Jace.

“You seriously think he’s gonna magically be okay? You broke his heart, dumbass,” Jace snapped at him.

That damned lump was back. Bigger than before, too.

“You don’t have to tell me I’m an asshole, Jace. I already know that.”

Jace narrowed his eyes at him and said, “Then act like it. At least try to change it. He deserves you making an effort for him.”

“Jace,” he said on a sigh. “I can’t. There’s no point. We’re not a thing and we never will be.”

“Maybe you should’ve told him that before you fucked him,” Jace retorted.

He squeezed his eyes shut and took a deep breath. Jace was right and if he hadn’t been so fucking selfish, maybe he would have been honest. With Sam and with himself.

“I can’t risk it. I can’t risk losing him. I can’t just… I just can’t, Jace.”

“You just can’t? That’s all you have to say for yourself?”

“Look. It’s complicated. It’s not just me I have to consider,” Griff said.

“Oh, right. Because you have a daughter.” Jace jerked around to look up at Ares. “Did you know he has a teenage daughter? One he apparently didn’t mention in the five years he’s known RK?”

Ares didn’t school his expression fast enough.

Jace gasped. “You knew?”

Ares grimaced and mumbled, “He’s my VP.”

Jace’s mouth dropped open in blatant disbelief and he shook his head before turning and walking off.

Ares’ sigh was loud and Griff found himself wincing in sympathy.

“You need to go fix that?”

Ares turned his gaze on him and said, “We’ll work it out. Whether you tell people about your daughter or not is your business and he’ll realize as much. If he’d asked, I would’ve told him, but it’s up to you to tell anyone else.”

Griff gave him a nod. He understood why Ares wouldn’t have kept it from Jace. They were partners and he would never ask either of them to keep something from the other. That would be cruel. He knew better than anyone how keeping secrets from your spouse could ruin a relationship. If Cate had talked to him, had told him the truth, they could’ve had a chance. A chance to be a family. Mia could’ve grown up with two parents instead of one.
