âAre you okay?â Zayne asked while I continued to stare at
him, on the brink of yet another panic spiral.
âAre you, like, immortal now?â I asked. âLike you wonât age?â
There was a soft, heavy-lidded look that settled into his features. âI was wondering if you were going to ask about that.â
âOh, no. Youâre not going to age, are you?â Groaning, I let my head fall back. âHere I thought going blind and you having to, I donât know, pick out my clothes for me would eventually strain our relationshipââ
âWhy in the Hell would you think that would strain our relationship?â
âWell, maybe not the clothing thing, but you know.â
âNo. I donât.â He tipped my head forward so we were eye to eye again. âExplain.â
âIf I get lucky, Iâll have enough vision left to see like this much.â I held up my thumb and forefinger, keeping them about an inch apart. âAs much as I hate to admit it, Iâm going to need help with a lot of things.â
A big, bright smile broke out across his face, surprising me.
I rocked back a little. âWhy are you smiling?â
âBecause you admitted that youâre going to need help and thatâs huge. I figured I was just going to have to sit back and watch you walk into walls for months before you asked for help.â
I stared at him.
âBut back to the not smiling part?â he went on. âIâm sort of offended that you think your vision is going to somehow affect the way I feel about you and strain our relationship. Actually, I am offended.â
âIâm not trying to offend you, and itâs not like I think you donât love me enough to deal with it, but I canât help worrying about that,â I admitted, feeling like I was naked even though I was completely clothed. âAnd considering what we facedâwhat we will faceâit feels stupid to even be talking about this right now.â
âItâs not stupid,â Zayne argued. âItâs important. Continue.â
I took a deep breath. âI donât even know how bad itâs going to get for me. So how can you know that it wonât get annoying? And if it did, I wouldnât blame you. I get annoyed with myself when I walk into whatever stupid thing thatâs been in the same place since the beginning of time. I get annoyed even now when I try to read the instructions or expiration dates on something and I have to guess what Iâm reading. So, I just... I donât want to feel...â Trailing off, I lifted my shoulders in a shrug. âHow did we even end up talking about this?â
âYou brought it up,â he reminded me, brushing my hair back from my cheek. âI know what you were going to say.â
âDo you know, all-knowing one?â
One side of his lips tipped up. It was a brief grin. âYou donât want to feel like a burden. Thatâs what you were going to say, but, Trin, nothing about you will ever be a burden. Everything about you is a goddamn privilege.â
My chest.
