COLD READERS/MENTALISTS
One of the most important principles we need to understand is that for every counterfeit spiritual practice, there is probably something very scriptural, something that reveals God’s heart. In other words, a lot of counterfeit spiritual practices are based on something completely scriptural, which the devil wants to have power over, so he manufactures his own version. The enemy is smart, yet he can’t create. But he can manipulate what God originally designed for how He connects to us. You should never fear something spiritual that is not from God, because, inherently, you’re more empowered than the counterfeit.
So many people are unfamiliar with the revelatory gifts. Their limited experience with anything spiritual has come through their unchurched friends or expressions of the supernatural that are not Christ-centered. Their only example of the prophetic may be a psychic, spiritual reader or mystic. Modern media is rampant with the supernatural or paranormal. Think about all of the eerie or creepy television shows, reality series, and movies centered on spirituality and the paranormal. The real version very often gets pigeonholed with the lesser version (aka the counterfeit).
Psychic and medium phenomena, as well as many other types of spiritual pursuit, just don’t have Jesus in the middle of them. They are not connected or committed to biblical theology or based on a relationship surrendered to a life of love through Jesus. God wants everyone to encounter Him, to feel how much He loves them. He can use anyone and anything to communicate. He’s God! But He consistently uses only those who have a relationship with Jesus and who practice giving revelations about Him.
However, as we model the revelatory gifts in Christianity and share what God is showing us, we may sometimes get accused of being like the world’s version. The accusers have never known what it looks like to be connected to God. Sadly, Christians who don’t understand the revelatory gifts can sometimes be the worst enemies of revelation, as they’re looking for a way to “undescribe” what revelation is supposed to describe—the presence of God manifesting in the here and now out of His great love for us.
