“Looks like Mason’s on Paradise Road,” Elijah says from his spot in the middle, “right by Las Vegas Boulevard.”

Dani relays this to the cab driver, who follows her orders down another road.

“God, they’re probably already lost.” She shakes her head, mumbling, “Why don’t they ever listen to me?”

“Well,” I point out, “with Paisley, the only way you’re gonna ever get through to her is with reverse psychology. Mason, well, he’s Mason. As for Cassie… Yeah, I’ve got nothing. I honestly never would have pegged her as the type to run off to Vegas.”

“Yeah,” Dani says. “I thought she, at least, would have some common sense. Mason and Paisley… I mean, I’m pretty sure the only thing we can do at this point is keep them on a leash.”

Elijah scoffs. “Even then they’d find a way.”

I nod. He has a point.

Dani leans her head against the seat in front of her, Elijah-style, and groans. “I’m supposed to be preparing for Stanford, not chasing a couple of idiots through Vegas.” I didn’t even think about that. She’s already got to be stressed out of her mind, and now she has us to worry about. Out of all of us, she’s always done the best under pressure. But maybe that’s just because we always put that pressure on her.

“Well,” I try, “now you can put ‘adept in dealing with children’ on all your resumes.”

To my surprise, she laughs, forehead still pressed comfortably against the seat back. Dani doesn’t laugh often, but when she does, it has the power to bring just a bit of light to any situation. Even this one.

At least, that’s how Will always put it.

It’s strange that out of the three of us, one breaking down and the other already broken, I’m the one who hasn’t cracked yet. Why is that? Shouldn’t I be stressing more than I am?

Shouldn’t I be worried about Mason, who’s dumb as a brick and has virtually no impulse control? Or Paisley, who isn’t stupid like Mason but will make the same decisions nonetheless because she thinks it’s fun?

Or Cassie, who doesn’t pull shit like this? What happened to her? She doesn’t do this sort of thing, not since I’ve known her. Is she okay?
