Chapter 8
âAren't you the lucky guy?â
The truck was a basic utility model. My pulse sped up when I saw the county logo printed on the side door.
A county vehicle? Are these government employees?
It had been a while since I'd seen any government workers. Things had fallen apart so quickly and just never came back. But after the announcement I'd heard on the radio, I wondered if our local governmental institutions were starting to rebound. It was one thing for the Federal government to assert itself, but getting local authorities to take action was where genuine progress would be made.
The truck door swung open. I sighted down my rifle at the truck⦠then looked up in surprise. A familiar figure clutching a familiar weapon emerged from the vehicle.
"Father?" Abigail gasped.
Pastor Chris stepped out of the truck, clutching Pops' double-barrel shotgun. The preacher seemed to have a limp. Jack Lawrence followed him out of the truck. The stocky, middle-aged man was part of Pastor Chris' congregation. I'd found him to be a reliable person.
Abigail started to rise. I put a hand on her shoulder and held her back.
"Let's just watch," I whispered. "If they're in any danger, we can protect them from here."
The driver got out and joined Pastor Chris and Jack Lawrence. He was a lean man with a scraggly beard and a battered baseball cap. He wore a high-visibility vest over his winter jacket. There was something about seeing that vest that made me grin. The normality of it was jarring after the craziness of this pandemic.
We were about 30 yards away and it was hard to make out what they were saying, but it seemed like Pastor Chris and Jack Lawrence were comfortable with the driver. The three men made their way to the back of the truck. Working together, they hauled out a deer carcass. It was a medium-sized doe. The driver and Jack Lawrence carried it to the sedan and lay the carcass across the hood.
The three men talked for a few more minutes. Then the driver offered his hand and they all shook.
The driver got back into the truck. The road was too narrow to turn around, so he backed down in reverse. Pastor Chris and Jack Lawrence waved to the truck as it drove away. I watched as the truck got down to the main road and then headed north.
"Can we go now, Mr. Petterson?" Abigail asked.
I nodded and stood.
"Pastor Chris!" I shouted.
My voice bounced through the trees. Pastor Chris and Jack Lawrence turned in circles scanning the woods, unable to tell where we were. I waved until they finally saw us, surprise etched on their faces. That they couldn't locate us at first was a good sign that our lookout was well hidden.
"Make sure you put the safety on that rifle," I told Abigail.
"Already did, Mr. Petterson."
Abigail and I made our way out of the trees and onto the road. Abigail got ahead of me, anxious to see her father.
"Well, look who it is!" Pastor Chris said, smiling as he embraced his daughter.
