CHAPTER TWENTY
The Portal unfolded before Nessa like a hall of mirrors. Infinite crystal petals of reflection, rose gold and red. Crystal petals in the thousands. The tens of thousands. This was nothing like walking through the enchanted mirror with the Fae Portal Coin. At Quentinâs, the glass had parted around them like liquid mercury. A cold whoosh of air and poof they were through.
Maelesen strode forward into the heart of the crystals, looking neither right nor left. They parted for him, leaving a Fae-sized opening behind.
She held Pim tightly, feeling his heart beating fast. As fast as her own.
Cold air enveloped them as she stepped onto the path. Far colder than her trip through the enchanted mirror at Quentinâs. Rose gold petals moved around her opening and closing, creating dizzying patterns of reflected light.
Pim meowed in her ear, hiding his face against her neck.
For a moment she didn't know up from down. She shut her eyes, her head spinning.
One of the fairies took her hand. She tugged Nessa gently forward.
Keeping her eyes closed she followed, counting the beats of her heart. At twenty, the air shifted. No longer cold. Warm. Moist. Almost wet.
Cautiously, she opened her eyes.
The unfolding crystal petals were gone. Instead, a tunnel of white mist surrounded her on all sides.
Were they through the Portal? She didnât smell anything. Last time Faerie had smelled wonderful. Like Christmas.
Maelesen was no longer in sight. All she could see was white nothingness. What else was there to do except go forward? After all, sheâd been commanded to appear. Maelesen had been sent as her escort. It wasnât like he was going to lose her on the way.
âWalk!â she told herself firmly.
The two fairies behind gave her a little push, the red fairy tugged her hand.
âIâm going, Iâm going!â she snapped.
They pushed a tiny bit harder when she didnât move.
âOkay, okay.â
She put one foot forward.
âWeâre walking.â
Then the other,
âWeâre walking.â
And repeat.
âWe are walking.â
The path began to climb. Gently but slanting up nevertheless
There was no noise. No wind. Only silence.
Even the fairies who never shut up were quiet.
It was only then Nessa remembered she was still in her stocking feet. Fionaâs sandals were looped around one wrist. Putting on the sandals did not seem like a good idea. Especially sandals a little too large. Lucky for her the ground was smooth.
Another rush of cold air signaled a change. A shaft of sunlight slashed through the mist. Then another and another, cutting wide swathes like a tailorâs shears through fine linen.
Strips of mist drifted through the openings. She could see the path ahead now. Maelesen was only a few yards away.
The tunnel of white mist slowly dissipated revealing a twilight sky. Bright splashes of pink, orange, and yellow crisscrossed the fading blue.
Splashes of color above her.
Splashes on her left.
And on her right.
And beneath her.
They were standing on a mirrored ribbon of light stretching across the twilight sky.
Nessa tried to shriek. Her throat constricted and all she could manage was a strangled gasp. She held Pim so tightly he meowed.
