CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Nessa looked blankly at the Fae and Jun Hee, unable to kick her brain or body into motion. She was so tired. Pim meowed a question. Probably whether he should transform and intervene.

Jun Hee proved he didn’t need any help. He swung both legs up, wrapping them around the Fae’s neck and shoulders. He gripped the man’s forearm with both hands while throwing the lower half of his in a full twist. His legs wrapped around the Fae’s neck. The momentum coupled with Jun Hee’s weight forced the Fae to break his grip.

Not Jun Hee. Still holding the man’s forearm with both hands, he wrenched it up and back. There was a nasty pop as the joint dislocated.

Despite being in God knows how much pain, the Fae reached for Jun Hee with his other hand. He wasn’t there. With preternatural speed, the bounty hunter was already crouched on the ground, a knife pulled from his short walking boot. It glinted silver as he slashed at the Achilles tendon in the Fae’s right leg. The Fae fell to his knees.

With the grace of a ballet dancer, Jun Hee stood and reached into a bag at his belt, one like rock climbers use to keep chalk. He turned in a circle tossing a handful of white powder over his head as he spun. Jun Hee slashed his own palm with the small knife and spat out a spell he had ready on his lips as the blood dripped onto the powder.

A green flame flared up around the Fae trapping him inside an invoked circle.

It had taken only seconds.

The Fae tried to rise to his feet but the wound in his calf kept him from standing fully. He threw himself against the circle with his uninjured shoulder screaming a spell of his own.

Jun Hee swiftly made another circle, sealing it with blood at four points and singing a fearsome spell that made the bile rise in Nessa’s throat.

Now the magic flared dark blue.

“Corpse powder,” Fiona said matter knowingly to Nessa. “He’s using corpse powder to form the circle and sealing it with blood. Nice. This guy is a pro.”

The Fae was still throwing himself at the first circle, trying to physically smash through.

Jun Hee cut his hand again for a third circle, invoking it with a different spell. This circle flared red.

Blood poured for the gash Jun Hee had made on the Fae’s calf. Unheeding, the Fae continued to beat one-handed at the barrier, screaming counterspells.

To no effect. The circles held.

“Up yours, asshole,” Jun Hee wheezed, his hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath. Putting up a circle took a lot of energy. He’d just closed three.

Quentin had curled into a tight ball, sobbing loudly. At least he’d stopped screaming.

Nessa was panting like a dog. There didn’t seem to be enough air in the room. Her heart banged against her chest as she gasped. Everything buzzed and the walls were closing in. With shaking hands, she fumbled for her backpack. If she didn’t drink, she was going to pass out.
