Being married to a cop creates a strange dynamic for any relationship, but we make it work.

​ Mostly, this is thanks to my wife’s incredible ability to turn it off when she gets home from her shift. Being on duty is a high stress environment where you’re always on your toes, alert and ready to take on anything that comes your way, including a bullet. Honestly, I’m amazed that she can do it, but then again she’s the strongest woman I know.

​ For me her job creates a whole new kind of stress, though. On one hand, I don’t really worry about things like our home getting broken into, especially when my wife keeps a gun in the closet and damn well knows how to use it.

​ But, at the same time, I hate the fact that she’s always in danger when on duty. We work about the same amount, but I’m not going to get shot through the heart while sitting in my office chair filling out spreadsheets.

​ Because of this, we try to make our time together really count. We’re connected on a level that I never thought was possible between two people, at least, before I met her years ago while walking in the park with my dog. I’m not sure I believe in love a first sight, but the two of us are pretty good contenders. It only took three dates for me to know that I wanted to marry my wife, Jenny, but that didn’t happen until a year later.

​ We’re an adventurous couple and like to do something new and different almost every day, even if it means something as simple as a sweet picnic dinner in the park.

​ “This is fucking fantastic,” I tell her, after swallowing a large bite of the pasta salad she painstakingly crafted for our outdoor meal. I look out across the grassy, downtown Los Angeles square as people come and go. There’s a group playing basketball nearby and others setting up for what looks like a movie in the park event; the perfect Summer evening.

​ “Why thank you, baby,” Jenny says, taking another bite of her own.

​ “So how’s work been?” I ask. “How’s the new partner.”

​ She quickly tries to finish her bite with a smile and then covers her mouth as she swallows. “She’s great. Really easy to work with.”

​ “What’s her name?” I continue.

​ “Alison,” my wife informs me. “You’ll meet her at the fundraising dinner this Thursday.”

​ “Oh, awesome,” I reply. We try to keep up with everything that’s going on in each other’s lives, but when you’re as busy as we are it’s hard to keep track. She’s had her new partner for two months now and I still can’t remember the girl’s name, which I’d rather wasn’t the case.
