Chapter Eleven

“I'll speak to him,” Aurelius said as Jari finished his lunch. “When he comes around, leave. He won’t actually do anything. He likes to hurt those who have absolutely nobody as protection.”

“All right.” Like the redheaded slave that day.

“Maybe avoid telling him to cum in his own mouth.”

Jari cleared his throat. “Erm, do you suspect him? Be honest.”

“No, because he’s all bark and no bite. All he cares about is fucking and picking at people if he can. I’ll find him before lunch. You can go wait in the Hall because the sight of you will only rile him up again. He’s like a dog when it sees a squirrel up in the tree. He thinks it’s taunting him. I won’t need you this afternoon.”

“All right. It’s just you helping your Father?”

“And lords.” Aurelius took a deep breath and rested an elbow on the arm of his chair. “It’s like pulling teeth. The city is well defended on the perimeter now, but…”

“What?”

“It’ll be fine.”

“You don’t sound like it’ll be fine.”

“If I said it’ll be fine, it will be.”

That was quite reassuring. They had a madman in charge.

“What does Gullveig do with himself all day?”

“Whatever. He's a bit of a loner at times.”

At least he left Jari alone.

The madman apparently wanted something at lunch since the King kept muttering close to Aurelius’s head. The Crown Prince was stiff and rigid as he remained slightly leaned away.

Whatever the King was saying, even Zylem looked surprised.

“No,” said Aurelius, just loud enough for him to hear.

“It would keep them at bay,” hissed Eurig.

“No, it wouldn’t, and you know this.”

A sly smile grew on Zylem’s face as Gullveig frowned and leaned over. “Father, what do you think of the watermelon wi-”

“Silence, boy. Aurelius, you know I love you, and I’m not asking for much. It would benefit-”

“No, because it's never enough.”

A few courtiers had started watching, and the King suddenly grabbed his oldest son’s wrist.

“I’m also your King, and you’ll do as I say. In fact, I don’t even need you. I’ll do it myself.”

“People are watching.” Aurelius tried to yank his wrist away.

Jari tensed, unsure if he should intervene. Zylem stood just as Eurig drew back his fist.

“Guards!” Gullveig got up from his chair. “Father, let go of him!”

“He’s gone mad!” a cousin shouted from a table. “Guards! Remember the Queen!”

The guards at the doors to the Hall rushed forward as several courtiers rose.

“What’s going on?”

“What is he doing?”

Who cared about the Queen right now? Jari jerked forward just as the King’s fist lashed out hard enough to knock Aurelius back and off of his chair, and half of the Hall gasped. Too late. Jari drew his sword.

“He’s insane!” shouted Zylem.

Jari cracked the flat against Eurig’s skull hard enough to stun him. Jari had a moment of absolute horror that he’d attacked the King. Aurelius scrambled up from the floor as he clutched onto the edge of the High Table and held his sleeve to his nose.

“Restrain the King!” Zylem shouted. “He’s gone mad! Take him to his rooms! Now!”

Jari jumped back as guards poured around the High Table.
