CHAPTER SIX

Cassandra could feel the conkers thudding against the bark above her head like small battering rams. The noise as they bounced off rang through her ears, making her head hurt. But the trickiest part was wading through the mounds and mounds of conkers and shells on the ground. Right now, the comfort of her garden felt a million miles away. This really wasn’t the adventure she’d had in mind!

And then, as quickly as the storm had started, it stopped.

The girls froze, waiting to see if any more conkers were going to come raining down.

“I think it’s over,” said Katy, putting her bark umbrella on the ground and picking splinters out of her ponytail.

Her friends placed their pieces of bark down too.

“I hope so,” said Cassandra, rubbing her tired shoulders and shaking out her arms. “I don’t think I could have kept going for much longer.”

“What now?” Katy asked.

Zia was about to say something when they heard rustling. They turned to see a red squirrel scamper out of some bushes and onto the path.

“Thunder, no!” shouted Katy, as the cat scrambled out of rucksack.

Thunder jumped to the ground and darted after the little squirrel. The squirrel’s eyes almost popped out of its head when it saw Thunder hurtling towards it, and it quickly dodged away.

The two animals started running in circles round the friends. Soon, it was impossible to tell whether the cat was chasing the squirrel, or the squirrel was chasing the cat.
