CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Lance glanced down at the body in front of him and raised a brow as he walked into the autopsy room Tuesday morning. "Um, where is the rest of the body?" Before him lay the top half of a man's body from about belly button up. The lower half was nowhere to be seen.
Carrie shrugged. "Industrial accident. They think he got caught in the teeth of an auto shredder. Somehow, he managed to tear himself away before being sucked all the way into it. A co-worker found him dead near the base of the machine."
Lance cringed. "What exactly is an auto shredder? Please tell me it's not one of those things that chew up metal. Like big cars or things like that."
"That's exactly what it is. He was found at that big metal recycling plant. He worked the night shift with two other guys. They'd gone on a coffee run, breaking rules and leaving him alone. When they got back, they found him on the ground. Cameras show him climbing up to the top of the machine but there was no record of a mechanical issue. The cameras lose sight of him and then there is nothing until his co-workers return."
"Suicide?" Lance suggested.
"Maybe. A bit of bad luck to have half his body thrown aside. I'm thinking maybe he fell and managed to use his arms to push away, tearing his body in half as he tried to avoid being sucked deeper into it." Carrie shook her head. "No matter how it happened, it had to be a painful way to die." She nodded to a bag lying on the foot of the table. "Some bone and skin fragments they found in the machine. Not near enough to be all his lower half. They have a team out there still trying to find pieces of him. He had a history of a heart condition. I think they're hoping he had a heart attack and fell so the family doesn't have to handle a possible suicide." Carrie waved her gloved hand at the body. "I don't think anything can make this easier on a family."
Jeremy floated into the lab at that moment and stopped suddenly as he saw the body. "What the hell?"
Lance would have to explain later. He couldn't go back over the details without Carrie thinking he'd lost his mind. "Well, let's get to work. Wouldn't be the first time we've seen a medical condition cause a more drastic accident."
"How?" Jeremy walked around the autopsy table, getting a look at the body from several angles.
"I'm going with suicide. I mean, why else would he walk to the top of the machine, especially when no one else is around? He would have been in just the right place to fall into the shredder. The ones I've seen have all kinds of protective railings and stuff around them." Lance was glad he didn't have to be one of the people on the scene, looking through the chewed-up metal for body parts.
