CHAPTER FOUR

Recumbent Upon a Bed of Thorns

They lie with the warriors, the Nephilim of old, who descended to Sheol with their weapons of war. They placed their swords beneath their heads and their shields upon their bones, for the terror of the warriors was upon the land of the living

Ezekial 32:27

These sons of Adam had come to my home with larceny in their hearts. Sliding along in the dirt like toothless asps, they craved what was mine. Desecration and rising above their station was their lineage. Discipline from their masters had been lax.

First came those that removed the sigils and woke me from my slumber. Rising, I ran my hands upon the glyphs and felt the old stirrings. The interlopers died for their impudence and I sat upon my throne, wondering what the passing eons had brought me. The daughters of man called and I left behind the broken wards, stepping forth into this new age of man.

They were bright little monkeys, these men. They tamed light and captured it in their devices, they built towers to rival that in Shinar and they were complacent in their broken world. I took those that were comely and would bear me children. They would serve and would be counted blessed by their people.

My eye exploded and I felt pain that merged with outrage. I was a king, I was destiny and I was War! To be treated such was an affront to all proper order. Spinning back around the corner, I touched the ruined gaping hole that had once held my eye and regarded the leaking ichor. It wouldn’t be the last shed this night.

After waiting for the healing to begin, I gathered myself and followed them into the starlit sand surrounding my ziggurat. Up, up and up I followed them from the base to the trail they had left. I could smell them, each distinct in their treachery. The thieves, the woman of time and my caravan of vessels fleeing my home would all be undone under the moon and the eyes of those who watched from above.

I began my inexorable march towards my prey when one kneeled. Finally, they were learning. Who
