Chapter 3

“It’s all here.” Anya’s voice was more animated than Gail had seen it in a long time, and she couldn’t gather enough courage to disagree with her wife. The results that showed in the papers in front of her were easy enough to understand. Somehow the child Bethany had was hers and her wife’s, genetically, and Gail couldn’t help but shake her head in disbelief.

She had sought more information about the matter after Doctor Simmons made her revelation, but all she found pointed out to what she already knew. There was no way, at least not yet, to make two women have a child of their own blood. That the woman hadn’t revealed her experiment’s success to the world only showed there was something more to it than that, but looking down at the DNA tests from Bethany’s child she couldn’t deny somehow it worked.

If Anya’s bright eyes were any indication her wife was more than ready to try what Doctor Simmons was offering, and Gail found herself sighing, knowing she didn’t have much of a choice. “We’ll call her tomorrow.” The smile Anya gave her settled all of Gail’s doubts for a bit.

The next day they called the fertility clinic and made another appointment with the doctor. Soon after they found themselves in one of her labs, where the woman took a sample of Gail’s blood. “I’ll use this to synthesize what will basically be sperm with your DNA,” She explained, carefully storing the blood inside a case previously prepared. “And once that’s ready we can start the procedure.”

“How long will that take?” Anya’s voice was underlined with her anxiety, and Gail looked at her wife’s face, and then away. She couldn’t deny she was also anxious about the whole matter.

“A few days at the most, unless something happens.” Simmons said with a smile, reaching out and patting Anya’s hand. “Then we just have to proceed to the … insemination.”

There was something in the doctor’s voice, a pause or hesitation that made Gail narrow her eyes, but then she shrugged and ignored it. Simmons hadn’t lied to them before, and even though her promise had been outrageous she at least seemed capable of fulfilling it. So long as everything went alright Gail would be willing to sing the doctor’s praises.

The week that followed was a slow one. Anya’s nerves were flowering and Gail didn’t know how to comfort her. She knew her wife was anxious, afraid, and scared of the future, but the best Gail could do was hug her and try to help. In Anya’s ears she whispered she would always be there, for Anya and their child, and that helped her wife calm down slightly, but soon enough the thought of what they were going to do took over Anya’s mind once more, and Gail needed to comfort her again.

When the doctor called and said everything was ready, Anya started crying in happiness, and the two of them ended up making sweet love that night, soft
